Back in the 1920s, the start of a new religion has dawned thanks to Gerald Gardner. This religion was called Wicca and it is a subculture of paganism. This religion was a major controversy mainly because it was a form of sorcery or witchcraft and many wiccans were discriminated against because many people thought they were devil worshippers. Even with the horrid discrimination, this religion still continued to prosper. It has become one of the most rapid growing religions to and today nearly 750,000 US citizens follow it.
Since the introduction of the internet for public use, the Wiccan population has skyrocketed due to websites such as spellsofmagic.com, Witchvox.com and Wiccantogether.com. This is especially shown in the comparison of the 2001 US ARIS Study and the 2008 US ARIS Study. In 2001, the number of Wiccan individuals In the united states totaled to estimate 134,000 and by 2008 it nearly doubled to 342,000. The same went for Neo-Pagan individuals who doubled from 140,000 in 2001 to 340,000 in 2008. This trend could continue to increase at an exponential rate and in 2015 the US is expected to have over 500,000 wiccan/pagan individuals.
With numbers like this, maybe someday we could all accept pagans for peaceful, loving, down to earth individuals instead of demonic, spiteful, satanic, devil worshiping people who need to be executed like the infamous Salem witch trials. We pagans don’t deserve to be discriminated against due to our religion so please don’t discriminate against us just as we never have discriminated against Christians. Thank you and blessed be.
